THIS FINE AND IMPRESSIVE 15TH CENTURY OAK SCULPTURE DEPICTS ST PETER KNEELING WITH THE COCKEREL BY HIS SIDE. THE LEGEND HAS IT THAT DURING THE LAST SUPPER WITH HIS DISCIPLES JESUS PREDICTED THAT PETER WOULD DENY KNOWLEDGE OF HIM, STATING THAT PETER WOULD DISOWN HIM BEFORE THE COCKEREL CROWED THE NEXT MORNING.FOLLOWING THE ARREST OF JESUS PETER DENIED KNOWING HIM THREE TIMES, BUT AFTER THE THIRD DENIAL HE HERD THE COCKEREL CROW AND RECALLED THE PREDICTION AS JESUS TURNED TO LOOK AT HIM, PETER THEN BEGAN TO WEEP BITTERLY. THIS FINAL INCIDENT IS KNOWN AS THE "REPENTANCE OF ST PETER".
