The framed lid having a raised panel, with moulded edge and fine small oak dowels, securing it to the frame (retaining the original strap hinges), above a superbly carved front.
The asymmetrically carved top rail, with scrolls and stylised flower heads, finishes on the right with a mythical serpent’s head above three framed panels, with arabesque-type scrolls and whorls. The bottom rails, stiles and muntins, all with scrolling “vine” and stylised flower heads. Two working drawers to the base.
English, probably West Country, circa 1660.
