ENGLAND, CIRCA 1831

A William IV 12 inch terrestrial table globe by G. & J. Cary, 1831 on turned mahogany supports. Printed on paper gores on papier mache and a plaster core. With a circular cartouche reading ‘CARY’s NEW TERRESTRIAL GLOBE DELINEATED From the best Authorities extant: Exhibiting the late Discoveries towards the NORTH POLE and every improvement in Geography to the present time. London: Made & Sold by G&J. Cary, 86 St James’s Street, Jan.4.1831.’ With a brass meridian ring. Raised on turned baluster mahogany supports tied by ‘x’ stretchers. The stand with a horizontal ring applied with a printed paper zodiacal calendar.

A similar globe dating from 1828 is in the National Trust Collection at Rufford Old Hall (NT784039).

John Cary was a globe maker in London who began his business in 1791. He introduced his new 12 inch terrestrial globe in 1798. The signature on this globe refers to John Cary’s sons, George (d. 1859) and John (1791-1852), who worked together from around 1820 (when they moved to St. James’s Street) to 1852, when the firm was closed.
