William Hatherell ROI RI (1855-1928) was a Victorian British painter and illustrator born in Bristol. Hatherell studied at the Royal Academy Schools and specialised in genres, historical and Arthurian legend. He illustrated many books as well as for magazines The Graphic, Harpers and The Century. Known for his subtle shading, expressive faces and gestures, Hatherell refused to be pressured by publishers and rush his work by lowering his standards. Represented today in the Welcome Collection, the Tate, Cardiff City Hall Imperial War Museums and other private and public collections.

"The Garden, 1910" is a lovely little oil painting on panel. Measuring 6"x 9", it is signed lower left, dated 1910 and dedicated to P. Dadd, a fellow artist and illustrator.
