Circa 1800
Rare and elegant early 19th Century mahogany Marine Stick Barometer; the slender case, square in cross-section with bowed sides; the ring suspension over engraved brass maker’s plate.
Protected by hinged door, are finely engraved silvered brass barometer and Fahrenheit thermometer register plates. The trunk, mounted with later hinged brass gimbals, housing original barometer tube and terminating in rare, turned, 3-section ebonised boxwood cistern.
Brother of John Cary, the renowned cartographer, William quickly earned a strong reputation for excellent precision instruments, working from premises in the Strand from c1789-1825 and winning numerous Royal commissions.
