Circa 1790
The celebrated Apollino, also known as the Medici Apollo, is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic sculpture of the young sun god Apollo, now in the Uffizi, Florence.
The figure was discovered in Rome in the seventeenth century, originally held in the Borghese collection it later entered the Medici collection and was recorded as at the Villa Medici in 1704.
The Apollino was venerated throughout the eighteenth century as an ideal form of the human body and was one of the most widely copied of Roman sculptures.
The present figure is a good late eighteenth century example, well carved in white marble, old repairs.
