A wonderful Georgian Welsh farmhouse table. It has a removable top which is made from four planks of sycamore and has two end-cleats. Sycamore was often used for table tops and other items that were used for making butter and cheese in the Welsh dairy industry as it was thought not to taint the taste of food. The top boards are held together by 8 three-pegged internal tenons, this method of fixing table boards together is found frequently on Welsh tables.
The base is made from oak and ash and probably originally had two very deep end drawers, which was usual for dairy tables. These drawers were removed once the table was needed for dining rather than the dairy. The original strong H-stretcher gives stability but still allows for chairs to be tucked under.
