Wellington after Lucas.

A large and well framed whole length portrait of Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington, engraved by Cousins after the original work by John Lucas; published by F.G. Moon in 1840.

Painted at the charge of the Duke, Chancellor of Oxford University, in response to a request in 1835 from the University, this portrait of the Duke was completed in December 1839. The publisher, F.G. Moon, had quickly learned that the University Authorities were requesting a portrait of the Duke as Chancellor and that the artist was most likely to be John Lucas.

Moon sought out the painter and entered into a specific agreement with him, that, providing permission were secured from the Duke for engraving and publication, he would pay John Lucas five hundred guineas for the copyright of the Chancellor's portrait, and undertake to have it engraved by Samuel Cousins, A.R.A. Within the original oak and gilt frame.

English circa 1840.
