Wax Portrait of Queen Charlotte Attributed to John Flaxman.
Late 18th Century.
Miniature.
A large and rare portrait of Queen Charlotte, in the guise of the wife of the Farmer King. She is facing right, wearing a blue gown with white lace trim at the bodice and shoulder, her hair adorned with a garland of spring flowers and tied with a blue bow. The background is painted with a full pastoral scene.
The piece is set in a circular turned wood frame.

Reference:
John Flaxman was from a family of wax modellers. He began working for Wedgwood in 1775, designing and modelling portraits and allegorical reliefs in clay and wax. Reilly says "The jasper and basalt reliefs from his designs are among the greatest of all Wedgwood productions".
This portrait of Queen Charlotte compares favorably with his black jasper medallion for Wedgwood, circa 1789.
