Village Children - Mura no Warabe.

Shima Ichijiro, known as Shima Gyofu(1885-1968).

A six-fold screen with a retrospective scene of early 20th century Japanese village children in kimono by a bamboo trellis covered with flowering peas in summer.  A boy far left, covered in his kimono quietly trying to catch a dragonfly with bare feet, leaving his straw sandals on the ground; a young girl with a broom stopping the work and watching him approaching the insect; another girl carrying a baby on her back nervously watching him; and another little boy happily playing with an already caught dragonfly attached to a thread.

Signed Gyofu with seal.
