Very interesting sterling silver sauce ladle with part twisted stem.
Made in York in 1840 by James Barber and William North.
The relatively deep circular bowl has a convex rim. The top third of the stem is twisted giving a very good grip.
The full set of hallmarks is very clearly and crisply stamped on the reverse of the stem just below the twisted section.
The last pieces of silver marked at York are understood to have been in 1856/7 and the Assay Office closed almost immediately afterwards. Today York silver is very rare and collectable and not easy to find.
This is a very practical but attractive ladle which has many uses.
