VICTORIAN Sterling Silver Bacchanalian Pattern Butter Knife. London 1869

Highly decorative Victorian sterling silver Bacchanalian pattern butter knife. 
Makers: Lias Brothers - Henry John & Henry John Lias. London 1869. 

The blade is decorated on the front with bright cut vine leaves and bunches of grapes and the front of the handle is decorated with the Bacchanalian pattern. The reverse side of the handle and the blade have wine related designs. 
The full set of hallmarks and the marker's mark are clearly stamped on the reverse of the blade. 
This rare Regency pattern was designed by Stothard for Rundell Bridge & Rundell. The earliest pieces recorded are dated 1812 and are in the Royal Collection.This pattern was mainly produced by Paul Storr but is still made today. 
This design originated as a dessert service and most of the pieces were gilded. There are signs of gilding on the handle of this butter knife. 
This a very versatile item which could be used for serving pate or soft cheese for instance. It would make a lovely gift.
