Victorian Silver Retracting Tape Measure.

A good Victorian circular silver Tape Measure with attached suspension ring. The sprung tape extending on a ratchet and retreating when the knob is pushed. Engraved with the Crest and Coronet of Earl Cadogan, probably for George Henry 5th Earl Cadogan, of Chelsea House, Cadogan Place, London. Born 1840, he served as M.P for Bath, and after succession to the Lords in 1873 Lord Cadogan served in the government as Under Secretary for War and then the Colonies before becoming Lord Privy Seal and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

James Chesterman had established his business with a Mr. Housfield in 1821, they were located at Nursery Street, Sheffield. The business specialised in making measuring tapes and instruments. In 1837 James Chesterman was listed as patentee of the spring tape measure and self rolling window blind. William Chesterman was elected Master Cutler in 1880.

Condition report

In good condition with no damage or repair. The sprung retracting mechanism is functioning, although on occasions it does not retrieve the last couple of inches.
