Essex crystal carved and painted showing a bird upon a cherry tree branch. Set on a mother of pearl background in 18kt gold.
Essex Crystal or reverse intaglio are made from a cabochon (domed) crystal which has been carved from the back and then hand painted. The finished work is then mounted, often with mother of pearl at the back, into a gold fitting.
Various levels of quality were made and this is an example of the highest quality of workmanship, both in the intricacy of the carving and the detail of the painting
