Victorian Novelty Silver Broom Dip Pen, Pencil & Pen Wipe.

An unusual Victorian novelty silver combined Dip Pen, Pencil and Pen Wipe, made in the form of a broom. The engine turned handle containing the dip pen and cedar pencil, the horse hair broom engraved with contemporary initials.

By Deakin & Francis, Chester, 1894.

One of our largest collections here at Steppes Hill Farm Antiques is that of our antique silver stationery, with pieces dating back from as far as the Georgian period. Silver propelling pencils were first patented in 1822 by Sampson Mordan and his co-inventor John Isaac Hawkins, and Mordans’ pencils, often made in novelty designs, remain highly collectible today. Silver dip pens have been around for centuries but are rarely used today except by artists or calligraphers, although they are still perfectly functional items. For almost 100 years it was the first and possibly only pen that our Victorian predecessors used. We also carry antique silver inkwells, paper knives, letter openers and other desk accessories. Our antique pens, pencils and writing equipment have been carefully selected and would be an ideal gift or addition to any antique or stationery collection.
