Victorian Enamel Gem-set Locket c.1880

A fabulous Victorian enamel and paste pendant/locket.

This beautiful pendant, based on a 'Holbeinesque' design, has red and pink paste stones set with small seed pearls within an intricate scrollwork pattern.  The majority of the pendant is covered in a virbrant blue enamel. The design is accentuated with darker blue 'dots.' The pendant would probably have originally had 3 pearls hanging from the base.

To the reverse of the piece is a large open glass locket back, We believe the glass is original and is in excellent condtion - it would be perfect for a photograph.

This type of design was popularised by Carlo Giuliano, who was known for his intricate Renaissance-revival jewellery, which featured fine enamel work and gem-set decorations.

Holbeinesque (“in the manner of Holbein”) jewellery became popular around 1870 and is characterised by large oval gemstones in the center of polychrome enamel work. These neo-renaissance items were inspired by the designs of the famous German artist Hans Holbein the younger (c. 1497-1543).

This wonderful locket has its original runner ring again set with a large pink paste and small seed pearl. The pendant is in excellent condition with no dents or obvious damage to the enamel. The pendant comes with its original fitted case by John Walker, Regent St, London.

Measurements: Pendant 4.5cm long, 2.9cm wide (including runner ring).

11.8 grams in weight.

Hallmarks: Unmarked - tests as gilt silver.
