Victorian Coral Necklace circa 1840.

An elegant early Victorian multi strand coral necklace.

This beautiful necklace has 6 strands of rich red corals in a twisted rope necklace. The necklace has coral beads strung to each end and an engraved gold torpedo style clasp with a tongue fitting.

The necklace is typical of the tourist jewellery from the early 1800s when the British went on their Grand Tour. The coral would have been sourced from the warmer countries of Mediterranean such as Italy.

Coral was believed to have a protective quality and was a popular choice for jewellery at this time.

Era: Victorian, 1839 - 1901.

Measurements: Necklace 46cm (18 inches) including clasp.

Clasp 1.5cm in length, 5mm at widest point.

Corals rich red in colour beautifully matched.

Hallmarks: Clasp tests as 15ct gold.
