An exceptional, exquisite and well preserved Victorian brooch in the form of a bee with ruby eyes, sapphire and diamond wings, natural pearl and cabochon natural untreated Burma Sapphire.

Mounted in 18ct rose gold and silver set, intricately formed and set with 2 well matched rubies (natural, no heat treatment) for eyes, round Victorian cut white diamonds set into the forewings and sapphires set into the hindwings.

The body comprised of a natural pearl thorax and a cabochon natural untreated Burma Sapphire abdomen. 18ct rose gold antennae and legs with a Victorian cut white diamond tail sting.

Setting diamonds in silver, “silver set”, was a technique used in the Georgian/Victorian period as white coloured gold and platinum were not yet available.

A very thin layer of silver was applied to the gold, on which the diamonds were set, to show them off to their best advantage (as the yellow colour of the gold would reflect and refract the light, thereby, distorting the white colour of the diamonds).

Cabochon Cut Blue Sapphire, Certificated, 4.6ct Burma (Myanmar) natural, untreated.

Total Sapphire weight (wings, excluding Cabochon) 1.0 cts (approx.) Natural, no heat treatment.

Total Diamond weight (approx.) 1.25 cts (Carats), H/I/J colour, VVS1-SI1 Clarity.
