A very unusual pair of George III Serving Dishes made in London in 1792 by John Fountain.
The Dishes are modelled in a very unusual shaped rectangular form with raised rim decorated with applied gadrooning. The wide border is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a shell and foliate spray cartouche. The Arms are those of the Leicester family of Westbury. The Dishes are in excellent condition and are of a very good weight and colour.
They display a crisp set of hallmarks on the reverse of each dish. John Fountain was the brother of William and both were apprenticed to Daniel Smith, which would account for the quality of his work, seen here with these dishes.
