The Tapersticks are cast and have stepped bases with a sunken well, decorated with reeding. The baluster faceted stems, and spool shaped sockets, are also decorated with reeded bands.
The bases are very well marked and the tapersticks have a good colour and weight. The base is engraved with a contemporary tree Crest. James Gould was a specialist candlestick maker and his brother, William, was apprentice to him.
His most famous work is the great Knesworth Chandelier in the Fishmongers Company of 1752. Tapersticks were used to seal letters on the desk, however they were nearly always made singly.
To find a pair from this date is most unusual and extremely rare. They are identically miniatures of the full sized candlesticks which were fashionable at this date.
