A very good James I oak joint stool, Salisbury, circa 1620.

Suggested attribution to Beckham family workshop.

Of good height, having a six-pegged triple-reeded edge top, cable-carved rails, and parallel-baluster over reel-turned legs, joined by run-moulded stretchers all round.

Provenance: Very possibly Lavington, Bideford, Devon.

An identical stool, originally in the acclaimed Stuart Kirby collection and certainly from the same workshop as this stool is documented as formerly at Lavington Chapel.

Literature: See Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture: The British Tradition (2016), p. 407 and Appendix III, for Humphrey Beckham (1588-1671) biographical details.
