The Candlesticks stand on a stepped shaped base decorated with reeding which rises to a circular sunken well. The defined baluster stems are decorated with reeding and the shaft and spool shaped sockets display horizontal girdles around them.

The base is engraved with a contemporary Scottish Crest with the Motto "Frappez Fort - Strike Hard ". The Crest and Motto are those as used by Wodehouse family, later Earls of Kimberley. The Candlesticks are in exceptional condition, with crisp marks, and are of a very good weight.

James Gould was a specialist Candlestick maker of fine quality. His brother was apprentice to him and his masterpiece is recognised as the Knesworth Chandelier in the Fishmonger's Company, made in 1752.
