A very fine George III Tea Caddy made in London in 1795 by Robert Hennell.
The Tea Caddy is modelled in the oval form with two reeded bands around the main body. The slightly domed cover terminates in a cast Neo Classical urn finial and the front is beautifully engraved with a contemporary shield shaped Armorial, surrounded by a cartouche of drapery mantling which was popular in the 1790's.
The Tea Caddy is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the base and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the underside of the cover. The Armorial is that of Holmes of Gawdy Hall, County Norfolk, impaling those of Greenwood. They are specifically those of Gervase Holmes who inherited Gawdy Hall in 1788. He was born in 1741, married Rebecca Greenwood, and died in 1796. Gawdy Hall is shown in the image stream.
