A very fine George III antique silver Bougie Box made in London circa 1780 by Richard Glanville.
The Bougie Box is circular in form wth a hinged cover. The sides, base and cover display reeded borders and a shaped swing extinguisher.
This example has a shaped carrying handle modelled as a buckle. The Bougie box is in excellent condition and is marked on the base and cover with the maker's mark and sterling mark.
Bougie Boxes contained a slow burning coiled wax taper which would have been lit and the wax used to seal letters. They were very often used when travelling.
