A very fine George II Sparrow Beak Jug made in London in 1734 by Richard Bayley.
The Jug stands on an applied stepped circular foot which is decorated with reeded bands. The baluster shaped body has the bellied form, seen often with the early examples, and rises to a slightly everted rim.
This piece has the typical cast "Sparrow Beak" spout, with drop beneath, and plain scroll handle. This piece is in excellent condition, has a good colour and still shows its original interior hammer marks from when it was originally made.
Richard Bayley produced fine plain hollow ware such as tankards, jugs, tea and coffee pots and had workshops in Foster Lane when this piece was made. He attained the prestigious position of Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths Company in 1751.
