A Venetian Casket circa 1500 of wonderful quality. Made from what is probably Cedar wood, and decorated with pastiglia, a ground of a red glass-like material, together with traces of green and blue pigments.
The decoration is a combination of scratch carving and punch work to the front and the lid. The design to the front has two panels with Leopards facing each other and divided by a foliate motif.
The construction is from dovetailed joints with batons on either side of the lid to give a steady fit. The original lock is still in place, and the wire ring hinges are replacements.
