A valentine from a private of the 44th (The East Essex) Regiment of Foot, watercolour and crayon on paper, the subject standing on a grassy mound behind a balustrade wall and beside a border of red and blue flowers. Behind him is a waterway with castle ruins or an old gatehouse with a willow fence running down to the water.

British circa 1850. Without writing.

The 44th was the only British infantry regiment to take part in the Retreat from Kabul. Of the handful of survivors from that disastrous march, the majority fell in a last stand at Gandamak in 1842. The regiment spent the next six years, the likely period of this valentine, re-recruiting in Britain and Ireland, only returning overseas in 1848 to garrison Malta.

Within a stained varnished frame, probably the only frame this picture has been kept in.

o.s:9.5 in x 7.5 in.
