Ushak Carpet.

Ref: 6903.

A fantastic antique Ushak carpet woven with beautiful colours and design, an excellent carpet which could work in both a traditional or contemporary setting.  This medallion Ushak uses colours and design with a palette similar to Oushaks from the 18th century after the 1920's and increase in  commercial production for the Western market meant they were woven faster and with cheaper synthetic dyes to keep up with demand for the US and Europe.

These earlier examples woven in the latter part of the 19th century have great character.  There is no major restoration to this carpet and the natural dyes have faded to create an exquisite decorative carpet.  Undoubtedly commissioned for the Western market these huge carpets often found there way to the US or Europe for large homes.   We have been placing enormous antique carpets of this magnitude in beautiful homes since the 1990’s and they can truly transform a room.  Like famous antique Ziegler carpets these large Ushak carpets have big flowing palmette designs and no central medallion which is their major appeal and why Ziegler carpets have a big following and demand.  These antique Ushaks have been slowly gathering pace with Zieglers and are in high demand too, so we are delighted to have purchased this stunning carpet for our stock.

A little about Ushak carpets and their history…….Ushaks were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and soft dyes are not uncommon.  Often younger Ushaks or Oushaks will be rich red in colour and use bolder geometric designs.  An Ushaks construction is always quite coarse and never fine like a Persian carpet, this is partly what makes them so interesting.  They are extremely popular with the best interior designers in the UK and overseas.  This Anatolian carpet has an almost contemporary feel to it and would work in a modern space as well as traditional.  We clean every carpet before offering it for sale and make sure the ends and fringes are secured.  A decorative antique carpet ideal for a drawing room, dining room or even a bedroom.  Their soft tones can compliment most interiors and has increased their value and popularity over recent years.
