An unusually petite rosso antico model of Scipio’s tomb in the form of an inkwell & mounted on a giallo antico marble. Italian, early 19th century. The Roman tomb of the Scipio family was found in 1780, at the height of the grand tour. Objects like this were extremely popular souvenirs & were often carved from the antique remnants of the Roman Empire. Measures 11.8 x 6.5 x 3.7cm. The lid has been cleanly broken in half & repaired, chips & nibbles as expected.
