A bold and naïve sailor work ship portrait, reputedly depicting HMS Victory, the three masted ship, in full sail, set against a green sea and pale sky. Embroidered in coloured wools on a linen canvas ground and picked out with cotton thread details, this heavy hulled ship is a simply stylised, almost abstract composition with a naturally naïve appeal. The wools are coarsely embroidered and there is evidence of some historic damage to the sky at upper left, but it is now conserved in a bespoke made wedge profile frame with gilt slip and museum glass. There is possibly some fading to the wools of the sky and maybe the blue of the sea, which has now turned almost completely green, in keeping with the nature of early naturally dyed wools.Stock number
