Unusual circa 1890 Senneh Rug.
2.02 x 1.30 metres.
Antique Senneh rugs from Northwest Persia are prized for their exceptional quality, delicate designs and distinctive weaving technique. They represent relics of an era defined by unmatched craftsmanship and creativity, much coveted in the market today.
Rather than the conventional geometric, or Herati patterns more often found in Senneh weavings, this striking 19th Century example – recently acquired from a distinguished London collector – employs a finely worked rose-and-leaf motif, inspired by earlier Bessarabian carpets from the Balkans. It features a soft denim blue field, with a subtle abrash – ie. variation in tone – which adds a real sense of depth and charisma to the rug, and serves as a wonderful backdrop to the earthy vegetable-dyed colours used in its all-over design, including tones of muted saffron and ochre red, framed by a simple border.
Retained in very good to excellent condition – incredible given this rug is around 130 years old – with its fringes and borders preserved on all sides. Its organic dyes have taken on a beautiful patina with age, lending warmth and charm to its colours.
This elegant accent rug is one of the most unique Senneh pieces we have had the pleasure of adding to our collection in some time – a true work of art.
