A fine quality Tunbridge Ware writing slope with a view of Battle Abbey Gatehouse set within wide mosaic borders of vine leaves. The frieze is inlaid on all sides with an 'architectural' style mosaic, very reminiscent of some of the remaining architecture at Battle Abbey. The interior with original velvet to the slope, is fitted with two inkwells with mosaic covers, pen tray, a lidded compartment and card storage slots. It is attributed to Henry Hollamby and is an example of his work at its best in the 1870s.
