A rare whitewood adjustable reading stand with an applied print of Princess Victoria, aged three, mounted on a donkey, returning from a morning walk whilst on holiday in Tunbridge Wells with her mother, the Duchess of Kent.

This print was published in 1822 by the Tunbridge Ware maker, Humphrey Burrows Senior and clearly shows the royal party outside his shop in Jordan Place, (on the corner of what is now Church Road). The name of Burrows appears on the shop, describing it as a Tunbridge Ware Manufactory and Repository.

The Burrows family contributed significantly to the development of Tunbridge Ware and are credited with introducing the techniques of inlaid turnery, miniature parquetry and tessellated mosaic in the 1830's but prior to this little is known about the Tunbridge Ware they produced. Although Humphrey Burrows Junior made an unsubstantiated claim that the business had been founded in 1685, in the absence of labelled items, it is not possible to identify their earlier work. This reading stand from the 1820's is, therefore,  an important example of Humphrey Burrows' work pre 1830 and illustrates that they were making whitewood items with painted and printed decoration alongside other makers such as the Wise family of Tonbridge, whose work from this period is more easily identified.
