A good quality Tunbridge Ware ebony paper knife with geometric mosaic to both sides of the blade, and with stylized decoration to the handle depicting a fleur de lys on one side.
Circa 1870.
Paper knives were intended to cut open pages of hand produced books or separate folded paper. They were produced in large numbers in Victorian times, including Tunbridge Ware examples.
Their smooth edges were ideally fit for purpose. They were not intended as letter openers, nor were they page turners as they are often erroneously described.
Letter openers evolved from paper knives and typically have pointed ends. Page turners simply did not exist at all.
