A most unusual Tunbridge Ware needlework companion by Thomas Barton veneered in ebony with a pincushion set between two lidded compartments. The lids and frieze are decorated with a floral garland mosaic with green wood used throughout the design. The lids have stickware ball shaped knobs - something not typically found on Barton's work. Unlike most pincushion boxes, in this instance the pincushion is not fixed but is removable, forming a stand-alone item in an ebony veneered holder. Thomas Barton's label on the base.
Circa 1870.
