A most unusual Tunbridge Ware twin compartment tea caddy of extremely small proportions. At 10cm (4inches) wide and only 6.6cm (2.7inches) high it is the smallest Tunbridge Ware caddy that we have ever owned. It is very well made with all the mosaics of miniature parquetry matching on corresponding faces. The interior has two lidded compartments and there is evidence of original tinning. There's also a tiny key, which appears original (although damaged).
The base of the caddy has pink paper and the inside of the lid a patterned textured paper, reminiscent to papers found on some pieces by Edmund Nye, suggesting a possible attribution for this piece.
It is difficult to establish the purpose of such a small tea caddy but it seems possible that it was made to be used whilst travelling, when the owner might wish to take some of their precious tea with them. It is possible that this was made as a special commission.
