Bettison's Library was situated in Hawley Square, the second square to be built at Margate in the 1760's. Bettison's was part of the development around the Square and was surrounded by a colonnade. It was considered to be the finest ever built at a seaside location and became a centre for people of wealth and fashion, providing a venue for card games and music recitals as well as for books.
