A fine quality blotter cover veneered in figured ash with Thomas Barton's renowned view of Battle Abbey Gatehouse to the front cover. This is thought to be an early version of the view as the doors on the left hand side of the gate match each other and are situated below two windows. On later examples there are differences in the doors and there is often only one window in this area of the design.
This view of Battle Abbey Gatehouse, which demonstrates considerable skill in the representation of the masonry, is often referred to as Thomas Barton’s masterpiece. This was recognised in 1864, when Barton received first prize for the design in the Industrial Exhibition at Tunbridge Wells. Barton may well have produced this view to mark the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1866.
