A Tunbridge Ware rosewood veneered stationery box inlaid with the mosaic of The Prince of Wales Feathers and motto 'Ich Dien', with the lettering in mosaic.

The front frieze is inlaid with perspective cubes surrounded with an early example of tessellated mosaic. The box is attributed to George & James Burrows, who produced the design to commemorate the birth of the Prince of Wales in 1841.

James Burrows is credited with introducing the new techniques of inlaid turnery, miniature parquetry and tessellated mosaic to Tunbridge Ware in the 1830's. It is also thought that it was at the Burrows' workshop that lettering in mosaic was first used. Henry Hollamby, who was apprenticed at the Burrows workshop in 1831, went on to use lettering  on a range of small boxes in the 1870's. This technique was then continued  into the 20th century by other makers.
