England, 19th century
A very charming and rare English 19th century watercolour of the library at Thirlestaine House Cheltenham, attributed to either Miss Georgiana or Miss Harriet Rushout-Bowles.
Thirlestaine House, unfinished at the time, was purchased in 1831 and enlarged by John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick to house part of his magnificent collection of art and sculpture. Lord Northwick was one of the greatest collectors of his day.
The galleries were open to the public, free of charge, every afternoon and were considered one of the most impressive and popular attractions in Cheltenham. On his death in 1859, the collection were dispersed.
This watercolour is attributed to one of Lord Northwick's nieces.
Thirlestaine House is now part of Cheltenham College.
