A fragmentary terracotta head of the Christ Child.

Italian, 15th century.

Measures 19.5 x 15 x 10cm

Originally part of an intimate devotional relief of the Virgin and Child, the present example bears a strong resemblance with a composition traditionally attributed to the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti.

For an extraordinarily similar example see the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Accession Number: 07.120.3 (last image), which they date as 15th century and state: After a composition sometimes attributed to Lorenzo Ghiberti (Italian, Florence 1378–1455 Florence). This composition is probably a variant of another Madonna relief which Ghiberti designed specifically to be molded and reproduced in painted stucco. See 08.22.3 for a painted and gilt stucco version of the subject.
