Early Tekke Main Carpet.

3.12 x 2.40 metres.

Tekke carpets are instantly recognizable for their distinctive stamped elephant foot patterns, even more so the early pieces, which are well known for their bold, visually arresting drawings.  Produced by the weavers of the Tekke tribes in Turkoman in Central Asia, Tekke rugs are highly sought after for their high quality wool and use of rich natural dyes. They are widely regarded to be among the finest weavings from the region. These pieces are truly timeless classics, and are well suited to decorate a wide variety of spaces.

This example, which dates to the turn of the last century, boasts a remarkably fine weave and lustrous wool, which lends a crisp clarity to its drawing. Being an earlier piece, it features fine organic dyes, giving a soft madder tone to the central field. This is in stark contrast to the darker, saturated reds often found in later examples.

The carpet has been retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with a good pile throughout. Its wide, highly decorative borders have been preserved on all sides.

A charming tribal carpet, this early Tekke would be equally suited to a classic or contemporary setting.
