A very good quality 19th century Swiss Black Forest linden wood umbrella and stick stand in the form of a carved bear, having original glass eyes and painted teeth. With replacement metal drip tray to bottom, retaining exceptional colour and patina throughout.

The Brienz region in the Alps of Switzerland is renowned for producing carved linden wood depictions of the creatures which can be found in the Black Forest and these carved bears were particularly popular in the 19th century when they were normally used to create some form of hall stand. The carvings produced that are generally 19th century, like this example, are well known for being extremely realistically carved.

This particular example has remained in good condition and is very well executed. The bear itself has a lovely expression to its face, these can occasionally be overly aggressive, or alternatively overly placid, but this one feels like it has the balance just right to us. It also retains it's original eyes which is a nice feature.

The recently replaced drip pans means that the stand is very much fit for purpose, perfect for having something a little different just inside the front door to greet your visitors with whilst also storing your umbrellas and sticks as originally intended.
