Henry Clarence Whaite RWS PRCA (1828-1912).

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1872. Inscribed in artist's hand on reverse.

Whaite was a landscape painter in oils and watercolours, he exhibited at most of the major institutions with success.

His oils are his most important works where he cleverly used colour,light and form to create impressive paintings. He was admired by Ruskin for his attention to detail. 

In Summer, the sweep of trees and the shape of the valley draws the eye in to the spot of light coming through the trees. While in the distance. on the left hand side a mountain range fades away.
