A suberb Japanese cloisonné vase with original carved wood base, probabaly exhibited in one of theworld expositions. Meiji period circa 1880, signed by the very rare artist Goto. (A good example of late 19th century Japanese Art influencing the art nouveau movement).

Cloisonné - Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments (cloisons in French[1]) to the metal object by soldering or affixing silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on their edges.

These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colors. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then needs to be fired in a kiln.  In Japan cloisonné enamels are known as shippō-yaki (七宝焼).

Artist Goto – The best known maker of Yokohama cloisonné, he left Kiato county in Owari province, wandered around, and then finally settled in Yokohama to make Toshima style of cloisonné in 1872 or 1873.

For a time overseas Goto achieved the highest reputation for cloisonné ware and received a gold medal at the second national industrial Exposition in 1881 for his vessels depicting flowering plants and small birds.
