About the object

This three-quarter length study was a preliminary version of a figure to be included in a group family portrait.  Painting from life, the artist has captured a finely characterised face which is finished with care.  In particular, the angle of the light is precisely established and creates interesting shadows on the face.  This study would nevertheless have been painted quite quickly to ensure a lively image.  The attitude and dress have been sketched in to establish their place in the larger composition but the main purpose was to record an actual face which might feature in the final painting.

It is the immediacy and perception of such working studies that gives them such a strong appeal today.  It is often true that these qualities seem diluted in the final work.
