A Georgian mahogany stick barometer, the scale with a manual vernier and engraved with the maker's name, 'Ramsden London'.

Jesse Ramsden was a Yorkshire man, born in Halifax in 1735. He was a pioneer designer of precision tools, in particular dividing engines, allowing him to produce highly accurate sextants, theodolites and vertical circles for astronomical observatories. He built all manner of other instruments requiring a high level of accuracy including barometers such as this. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1786 and awarded the Copley Medal in 1795. He died in Brighton, November 5th 1800.
