18th Century Anglo-Chinese Bamboo & Mahogany Spirit Barrel on Stand.
Circa 1750 Possibly of Maritime interest.
Exceptionally rare with sumptuous patination and colour.
The substantial single piece bamboo barrel skilfully worked utilising its natural contours. It sits on a curved mahogany keel shaped support leading to an imposing stepped and ogee moulded platform base. The tap and stopper possibly Paktong.
The ogee plinth is made in two halves while the foot moulding is sectioned on the long sides. These features combined with the keel shaped support could indicate that this was created by a talented ship’s carpenter utilising a Chinese bamboo water barrel.
Overall height 11” (28 cm) Base width 8 ½” (21.5 cm) depth 7” (17.5 cm).
