Spanish Talavera tin-glazed polychrome dish, circa 1600, decorated in the centre with the bust of an Oriental figure in profile amidst stylised scrolls, diameter: 9 ¼ in. (23.5 cm.). For a similar dish see the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection No.1072-1871; see also, Ray, Anthony, ‘Spanish Pottery: 1248-1898’, p. 175; Ray notes that this style is reminiscent of Italian sixteenth-century ‘portrait dishes’.
