Small Persian Heriz rug dating to the latter part of the 19th century.
It is an unusual example of its type on account of its small size, but also in some of the elements in the field, notably the inclusion of people and animals, including four-legged creatures with peacock-like tails.
The central vertical axis of two hexagons flanking a central medallion is crossed by a horizontal axis through the middle of the central medallion creating a degree of symmetry without mathematical precision. A madder-red meander on the sides and zig zags for the spandrels frame the field on a dark blue ground the colour of which is a deep indigo.
The main border on a yellow ground is decorated with a meander of so-called "oak leaves" and flower heads. It is flanked by two identical minor borders in light blue and pink which is, in effect, a light secondary red, thus giving the dark ground colour of the field a visual lift.
This decorative rug is in very good condition.
